After a 2 year break, our podcast, Creator Generation is back, and we’re relaunching with a topic that has the potential to shape the future of the creator economy.

Australia has introduced a minimum age of 16 for certain social platforms starting 10 December 2025. It's being called ‘The Social Media Ban’.

The new rules affect a number of major social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.

It’s a move that supporters argue is essential for protecting young people’s wellbeing. But the proposal has sparked a huge debate: critics warn it’s unworkable in practice, easily bypassed, and could fundamentally alter how creators reach audiences and how Australians access information and culture online.

This isn’t just a national issue - it raises global questions about platform structure, parental responsibility, digital rights, and the future of free expression.

When one country forces platform changes, the ripple effects often become global.

Governments worldwide are watching and getting ready to take action.
Europe is circling similar ideas.
Malaysia has legislation coming...

So we brought in two brilliant guests to help unpack what this means:

Sarah Renee Clark - Creator & Entrepreneur
Taylor Lorenz - Journalist covering digital culture & policy

Why this episode matters

This shift could reshape:

• who can access and follow creators
• how platforms verify and moderate users
• how teens connect with the world
• and other unintended (and potentially dire) consequences

We don’t have all the answers - but this episode gives you the context, questions, and early signals worth paying attention to.

Fun fact

Taylor Lorenz was our last guest on the pod back in 2022.

So, it feels fitting that our first episode back brings Taylor with us again, right as the internet enters a new era of regulation.
