YouTube just bumped the thumbnail size from 2MB to 50MB.

Sounds like a backend tweak. It’s not.

It’s a clear signal about where the platform is heading - tbh where it actually is right now - and how creators need to move with it.

We’re seeing it play out in real time.

More & more creators in our programs are now pulling the majority of their views from TV screens.

Not mobile. Not desktop. TV.

You might have heard this before, but it deserves to be repeated again and again.

In the last year, the number of YouTube channels earning six figures or more in revenue from TV screens is up by over 45%

YouTube is also the #1 streaming service by TV watch time.  Ahead of Netflix, ahead of everyone. Over 12% of all television viewing in the US.

Which means your thumbnail isn’t just fighting for attention in a mobile  feed anymore.

It’s holding its own on a living room screen.

That changes the game.

What this unlocks:

– Higher resolution. Sharper detail.
– Thumbnails built for distance, not just scroll
– Creative that actually holds up on a 60-inch screen

If your thumbnail only works on a phone, you’re designing for yesterday’s platform.

The same goes for your content.

So, when you’re designing your next thumbnail ask yourself: “Would this land when on the lounge room TV?”

For creators, this shift to TV changes more than just thumbnails

It changes how content is conceived.

Phone-first, snackable videos that thrive in feeds feel different when they’re blown up to 65 inches and watched from a couch with friends and family.

Pacing, visual clarity, structure, even audio - everything carries more weight when your audience is leaning back, not leaning in.

The creators who win the living room will think more like showrunners - building episodes people choose to watch together, not just scroll past alone.
